Emmaus Borough Council Honors Members of Local Police Force for Bravery and Heroism
Sgt. Robert Alburger and Patrolman Timothy Kline were awarded Commendations for Heroism. Sgt. Alburger faced an assault on January 13, during which a perpetrator shattered glass into his eyes. Despite sustaining injuries, Alburger demonstrated exceptional courage by applying a tourniquet to the subject, who had severely injured himself. Despite being blinded by the glass, Alburger continued to assist in detaining the individual.
Patrolman Kline showcased heroism on June 24 when responding to a building fire at the Colonial Crest Apartments. Swiftly grabbing a ladder, Kline rescued individuals trapped on outside balconies, escorting six adults and four children to safety.
Sgt. Jeremy Schilling was awarded a Commendation for Bravery. In a daring encounter, Schilling faced an intoxicated female driver wielding a large knife. Despite the threat, he successfully took her into custody without causing harm to either party.
Average Gas Prices in the Lehigh Valley Down 70 cents from This Time Last Year
Gas prices in the Lehigh Valley experienced a decrease of approximately 6 cents last week, marking a significant overall drop of 70 cents compared to the same period last year. According to GasBuddy, a company that monitors gas prices nationwide, the average gas price in the area stands at $3.36 per gallon, showing a decrease of roughly 19 cents from one month ago.
Comparatively, gas prices were about 70 cents higher at this time last year. On Sunday, the most affordable gas station in the region offered gas at $3.09 per gallon, just 10 cents higher than the lowest-priced gas station in the state, where gas was priced at $2.99 per gallon, according to GasBuddy data.
While the local average gas price is slightly above the national average of approximately $3.33 per gallon, it represents the lowest gas prices for this time of year since 2020 when the average was $2.44 per gallon.
This decline in gas prices precedes the Thanksgiving holiday, during which an estimated 55 million Americans are anticipated to travel, predominantly by car, according to AAA. AAA forecasts that around 49 million Americans will travel by car for Thanksgiving this year.

Montgomery County Man Sentenced to Maximum of 19 Years for a DUI Crash in 2022 That Killed Allentown Woman.
A man from Montgomery County has been sentenced to 5 to 19 years in state prison for causing a fatal crash in 2022 while driving under the influence in Hanover Township, Lehigh County.
Brian C. McGoldrick, 42, residing in Glenside, entered a guilty plea on September 12 to charges of homicide by vehicle while DUI, a first-degree felony, and second offense DUI with a blood alcohol content of 0.16% and greater, a first-degree misdemeanor.
The sentence was handed down by Judge James Anthony on Tuesday, with McGoldrick set to serve an additional year of probation upon his release.
McGoldrick's blood alcohol content was recorded at 0.26 more than an hour after the September 2 crash that claimed the life of Catherine Ann Neelon, 55, of Allentown. The collision occurred as McGoldrick was traveling north in the southbound lanes of Airport Road, leading to a head-on collision with Neelon's vehicle near Catasauqua Road.
Catherine Ann Neelon, a well-regarded member of broadcast crews covering high school sports with the Astound TV Network, was returning home from the production studio after completing coverage of an Allentown Central Catholic-Emmaus football game at the time of the incident.

Emmaus Field Hockey Goalkeeper, Emma Cari, Finds Her Calling
Emma Cari could have easily been a member of the Emmaus High School girls’ soccer team for the past four seasons. She has grown up in what could be called a soccer-friendly home as her father, John, has been the head coach of the Green Hornets boys team for her entire lifetime.
She gave field hockey a try and made a decision in middle school. Cari found her niche wearing the goalkeeping pads in field hockey. In three years as a starter so far at Emmaus, has lost only twice: in last year’s state semifinals to Wilson-West Lawn and to Oak Knoll of New Jersey this season. She made the play of the game in a tremendous game-saving save in Emmaus’ win over Lower Dauphin in the 2021 PIAA title game.
Cari is the captain of a team that has a chance to win another title, but first things first. Emmaus (24-1) must first defeat Lower Dauphin, the District 3 runner-up, in a 6 p.m. PIAA Class 3A semifinal at Hamburg High School.
Knowing that her high school career has only one or two more games left has not changed the approach that she and her teammates have. Past successes and failures mean little once the whistle blows to start the game.

Really?
Myth: The popular Christmas carol contains the yuletide phrase “God rest you, merry gentleman.”
Truth: The comma is in the wrong place. The original phrase, which dates to the 1400s, was “God rest you merry, gentlemen.” The phrase “God rest you merry” uses rest not in the sense of “relaxing,” but more like the phrase rest assured. So in essence, the song is saying, “May God keep you merry, gentlemen.”
Myth: In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, when Juliet stands on the balcony and asks, “Wherefore art thou, Romeo?” she is looking for him.
Truth: In Elizabethan times, wherefore meant “why,” so Juliet was asking, “Why are you Romeo?” She was lamenting the fact that he came from a rival family, forcing them to keep their love a secret.
Myth: You “sweat out toxins” when you exercise.
Truth: Sweat’s one-and-only duty is to cool off the body. As such, it’s made up of water and trace minerals. Toxins are processed through the liver and kidneys and then excreted during what you are most likely doing right now.
