Safety Concerns at Proposed Topgolf Site in Lehigh Valley Town Center

The proposed Topgolf facility in Lower Macungie, near the junction of Route 222 and Interstate 78, has sparked worries about the hazards of flying golf balls. The Lehigh Valley Planning Commission (LVPC) has highlighted potential safety issues linked to the placement of the driving range, which abuts I-78. The LVPC is adamant that Topgolf must implement measures to ensure golf balls stay within the designated range, which will be enclosed by high nets. Despite Topgolf supplying restricted-flight golf balls, there is a risk of customers using unrestricted balls, which could potentially fly over the nets.

Citing incidents from other Topgolf venues, the LVPC expressed concern about golf balls hitting passing cars on I-78. They stressed the importance of the developer specifying the driving range's length and the height of the nets. The LVPC recommended a back net height of at least 150 feet to prevent longer drives from reaching beyond the facility, addressing the safety apprehensions linked to the project's development.

Mack Strike Still Unresolved

As the United Auto Workers strike against Mack Trucks enters its second week, the manufacturer announced on Friday morning that it has turned down the latest offer from the union.

Mack stated that the UAW presented an unexpected list of economic demands, which the company deemed unreasonable. According to Mack, the bargaining process seems to have reverted "to day one," disregarding three months of previous constructive negotiations. The specific details of the union's demands were not disclosed by Mack.

The company expressed its anticipation to resume negotiations on Monday and expressed hope that the UAW leadership would present more realistic proposals. The strike, which began on October 9 after 73% of members voted against a tentative five-year contract with Mack, impacts 3,900 workers, including 2,300 at Mack’s Lehigh Valley Operations plant in Lower Macungie Township.

Lehigh Valley Icon, Frank D’Angelo Dies at 61

Frank D’Angelo, a revered PIAA official who dedicated over four decades to local high school sports, has passed away at the age of 61. A Hazleton native, D’Angelo battled pancreatic cancer for nearly a year, a diagnosis that came shortly after he completed 43 years as an official in baseball, basketball, and football.

In the past year, D’Angelo received prestigious honors, being inducted into both the National Football Foundation Lehigh Valley Chapter Hall of Fame and the District 11 Hall of Fame. Widely recognized in local high school athletics, he commanded respect throughout Pennsylvania. D’Angelo served as a league assigner in multiple sports, including football, basketball, lacrosse, soccer, and softball. Additionally, he was a rules interpreter for District 11, officiating numerous District 11 title games in three sports and seven PIAA championship games—three in baseball, two in basketball, and two in football. For six years, he represented District 11 as its Male Officials representative.

As his career neared its end, he took moments during events to appreciate and engage with the people around him. Moreover, he was a man of profound faith, attending Mass daily, and his faith provided comfort throughout his battle with cancer.

Phillies Drop Game to Diamondbacks 4-2 End Their Season

The Phillies ended their season by dropping a Game 7 to the Diamondbacks. After playing a great season they battled Arizona to the last out.

The Diamondbacks are now on to the 2023 World Series where they will play the Texas Rangers for the World Championship. The first game is on Friday, October 27 at 8PM.

Really?

IRELAND The Mullingar Equestrian Centre, located about an hour from Dublin, had to cancel its 2006 Christmas party after a resident camel entered the party area and drank several cans of Guinness. (It bit through the cans to get to the beer.) The intoxicated beast then ate the 200 meat pies that had been laid out for guests. The camel, named Gus, had somehow escaped from his pen when the staff left to change for the event. “You couldn’t blame him,” said owner Robert Fagan. “He’s really a very gentle, docile sort of camel.”

Smile a Bit

A child asked his father, "How were people born?" So his father said, "Adam and Eve made babies, then their babies became adults and made babies, and so on." The child then went to his mother and asked her the same question and she told him, "We were monkeys then we evolved to become like we are now." The child ran back to his father and said, "You lied to me!" His father replied, "No, your mom was talking about her side of the family."
