Early Voting Has Started in the Lehigh Valley

Voting for the 2023 election has officially commenced in Lehigh and Northampton counties. From now until October 23, eligible voters who have not yet applied for mail ballots can conveniently visit their county’s election office. In a process known as ballot-on-demand, they can apply for, complete, and submit their ballots all in one visit.

This year, voters will be making crucial decisions in several statewide judicial races, including the Supreme Court, as well as county-level offices such as Lehigh County commissioner and Northampton County Council. Additionally, multiple municipal races are underway.

One of the most fiercely contested battles is taking place in school board elections. Across the Valley, these races have become battlegrounds for ongoing debates surrounding curriculum, books, and LGBTQ student rights, resulting in highly competitive contests.

For those who wish to cast their votes in the November 7 election but are not yet registered, there is a deadline approaching. Voter registration applications must be completed by 5 p.m. on October 23. This can be done either online at www.pavoterservices.pa.gov or in person at your county elections office.

Smile a Bit

Joe lives next door to a slightly dotty old lady in her 90s named Mabel.
One day Joe gets a phone call from Mabel and she says to him, “Joe, can you please come over and help me? I’ve got a complicated jigsaw puzzle and I can’t figure out how to get started.”
So Joe thinks for a second and then he asks Mabel, “What’s the picture meant to be when it’s finished, Mabel?”
“The picture on the box is a rooster,” Mabel responds.
Joe’s busy but Mabel’s a dear old lady, so he decides to go over to help her.
Mabel welcomes Joe and escorts him into her dining room where the box and its contents are all over her dining table.
Joe surveys the situation in front of him and then he turns to Mabel and says, “Mabel, I have to tell you, there’s no way we’ll be assembling these pieces into anything resembling a rooster.”
“Why’s that Joe?” Mable asks.
Joe smiles benevolently and then says, “Mabel, why don’t you make me a nice cup of tea.”
“OK Joe,” says Mabel with a smile.
And then Joe sighs deeply and says, “While you’re making the tea, I’ll put all the Corn Flakes back in the box.”

Readers Speak Out:

Reader, Peggy, writes to us:
"There is a large movement to "leave the leaves" - that is, leaving the fall leaves in flower beds and elsewhere because it is an important habitat for insects over the winter (all kinds, and no they are not all out to get us). Of course, it is important to remove those on the streets for safety's sake.

There is data that says even leaving 1/3 of the leaves and just keeping them in your flower beds is incredibly helpful.

Another good practice is chop and drop plant stems or leaving some stems (especially those with flower heads that have gone to seed) for birds and critters. Many insects lay eggs in the stems of plants so leaving them till spring or cutting them and putting them in a side spot in your yard can be helpful.

It personally makes me sad how people are obsessed with perfect sterile lawns. Many other countries (the Netherlands is one) and areas in the US, do not abide by this excessive clean up of wild things.”
