Lehigh County Issues Incorrect Mail-In and Absentee Ballots

In the initial set of instructions sent out on Monday, voters were incorrectly informed to seal their ballots in the white secrecy envelope marked “Official Election Ballot.” However, the actual secrecy envelope is yellow in color.

It's important to note that the ballots and envelopes themselves are not flawed, as clarified in a county news release on Friday. Subsequent mailings will contain accurate instructions.

To correctly prepare the mail-in or absentee ballots, voters should place their ballot inside the yellow secrecy envelope and then insert it into the white mailing envelope. The voter declaration on the white mailing envelope must be signed and dated on the same day; otherwise, the ballot will not be counted. Voters can either mail the completed ballot or drop it off at the board of elections or an official collection site.

For those intending to vote, the registration deadline is October 23. Mail ballot applications must be submitted by October 31, and the completed mail ballots must reach the board of elections by 8 p.m. on November 7, when the polls close.

Possible Mountain Lion Spotted in Macungie

State police say a large cat — possibly a mountain lion — was spotted in Lower Macungie Township Sunday, and advise residents to report if they see the animal.|

The feline was seen in the fields behind Hanover Drive. A resident took a picture of the cat to show police.

If anyone else sees the animal, they should report it to the Pennsylvania Game Commission at 610-926-3136 or Pennsylvania State Police Fogelsville at 610-395-1438.

When will peak fall foliage arrive in the Lehigh Valley?

This year's fall foliage season has arrived in the Lehigh Valley and Pennsylvania, and "leaf peepers" may be in for a more colorful show than last year. Despite a dry start to summer, there was enough rain to create good conditions for fall colors. Experts expect foliage to be very vibrant this season, with peak colors arriving in mid- to late October. The PA Department of Natural Resources recommends checking state parks and forests once peak happens. While an early drought threatened colors, timely rains brought relief. Visitors bureaus are reporting high interest in foliage tours. Though weather could affect timing, foliage reports will help visitors plan trips to see nature's autumn show. Overall, conditions seem right for a beautiful display this fall foliage season.

Allentown School Board to Vote on Weapons Detection System

The proposal before the school directors involves the approval of 30 weapons detection systems, inclusive of base plates, test pieces, handheld metal detectors, and staff training, totaling $557,176. Each weapons detection unit carries an approximate cost of $17,000.

These systems are designed to identify firearms, knives, and explosives. Notably, students can walk through these machines with minimal delay, a notable improvement over traditional metal detectors. To prevent false alarms, students will need to pass their laptops around the machine. Superintendent Birks assured the audience that the implementation of these systems is not expected to cause significant delays during students' morning entry.

If the proposal gains approval, the detection systems will be strategically placed at doors with high foot traffic, as recommended by the vendor. According to official school board documents, Allen High School would have 17 weapons detection units, Dieruff High School would have five, Building 21 High School would have six, and J. Birney Crum Stadium would have two. Pending their effectiveness, these systems could potentially be extended to middle schools within the district at a later date.

New York Jets Knock Eagles From Unbeaten Ranks, 20-14

In a stunning turn of events, Breece Hall powered through the defense, scoring an 8-yard touchdown with just 1:46 left on the clock. This game-changing play occurred right after Tony Adams intercepted Jalen Hurts, marking the New York Jets' first-ever victory against the previously undefeated Philadelphia Eagles. The Jets, with a current record of 3-3, seemed destined for their 14th consecutive loss against the Eagles, but fate had other plans.

Hurts’ third interception of the game, coupled with Philadelphia's fourth turnover, set the stage for Adams' 45-yard dash, instantly putting the Jets in prime scoring position. The electrifying moment reverberated through MetLife Stadium as Jets fans erupted in wild celebration. Following Hall’s pivotal run, Zach Wilson orchestrated a flawless connection with Randall Cobb, securing a crucial 2-point conversion.

With the Eagles (5-1) desperate for a comeback, they received one last opportunity to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. However, the Jets' defense, unyielding throughout the game, stood firm. Hurts' deep throw to DeVonta Smith on fourth down was skillfully deflected, and with that crucial defensive play, the Jets' unlikely triumph was sealed. Wilson and the offense calmly executed a couple of kneel-downs, putting the finishing touches on a historic win that defied all odds.

A farmer had a three-legged pig and his neighbor asked him why the pig had only three legs. "Well, I'll tell you" the farmer replied. "One day I was plowing my field and the tractor turned over and pinned me underneath. That pig ran for help. He saved my life". "Oh, that's how he lost his leg?" the neighbor drawled. "No. One night my wife and I were sound asleep and the house caught on fire. That pig woke us up. He saved our lives!" "So that's how he lost his leg", stated the neighbor. "No, that wasn't it" the farmer affirmed. Exasperated, the neighbor demanded "Then how did he lose his leg?" and the farmer replied, "When you have a pig that good, you don't eat him all at once!"
